transform your existing extension with a pitched roof!
On this project in Chelmsford we created a beautiful pitched tiled roof with a vaulted ceiling, with 2 velux windows for added light, fully insulated and cladded in white upvc.
it’s amazing how simply converting a flat roof to a pitched tiled roof can completely change the look of a house, it also offers options of increasing ceiling height and adding velux windows for added light and airflow, plus it has the added benefit of lasting far longer than a flat roof!
So what’s the process for converting your flat roof?
step 1, the first step is removing the old flat roof down to the brick wall, and depending on if a vaulted ceiling is required removing the ceiling and joists.
step 2, the second stage is working out the roofs pitch, this will determine the height of the roof. Then we can begin adding the wall timbers and steel wall straps for a secure base, after this we can start adding the timber joists. If you want 1 or more skylights, spaces for velux windows can be set in place.
step 3, now we can get the felt and battens fitted to the joists, the breathable felt membrane is waterproof and also allows condensation to escape through so there’s no worries of moisture buildup! We can then fit the insulation boards between the rafters to ensure the room is cosy in the winter and keeps cool in the summer.
Step 4, the final stage! We can now fit the velux windows into place, and the roofing tiles. Fascia, soffits and guttering are fitted to the front edge to give a nice clean look, followed by the cladding to the sides. Lead flashings are then fitted into the brick work and dressed over the tiles, we can then point the verges with sand and cement mortar to ensure the roof is fully waterproof for many years to come!
